Class Notes from Tuesday, 7-21-15

- Elizabeth Day + Sherri Williams

- social media= the news

- birth of a new civil rights movement

- claim: statement that can be out in a sentence, fact, of judgement --> Assertion

- argument: claim that us supported by a premise

- issue: topic people have more than one perspective on

#BlackLivesMatter: (group discussion)

- claim: black lives really matter, she doesn't think America truly feels this way

- argument: black Americans remain at a disadvantage in almost every area of society (education, employment, housing, voters' rights, and felony conviction

- issue: statistics about how police violence results in more deaths towards African Americans compared to white Americans

Class Discussion:

- issue: unbalanced police brutality --> stats (race, "nature of the crime", un-armed)

- social injustice --> education + poverty, unequal access= disadvantage

- social media plays a big role in creating a new movement

- violence + injustice towards African Americans

- claim: movement has no clear keader (male, straight --> Dr. King Jr.

- in almost every area of society, African Americans are at a disadvantage

- argument: the hasthtag itself --> Black Lives Matter! (literally)

Rhetorical Analysis Paper:

- 3-4 pages

- thesis

- avoid sweeping generalizations, colloquilalisms

- recent/significant media portrayal of cultural conditions

- look up an article to focus on

Evaluating Sources:

- Authority --> Who wrote it? Qualified to make claims

- Currency --> When was it published? Related to topic?

- Validity --> Supported by claims? Cited?

- Audience --> Intended for?

- Point of View --> Perspective of the author?
